MEET THE FISH
Some run. Some dive. Some jump. Some just try to drag you into the Gulf. These are the fish that make fishing with Jawstoo a little different every time we leave the dock.
The Gulf Lineup
DIFFERENT FISH. DIFFERENT FIGHT.
The waters off Indian Rocks Beach offer everything from hard-pulling bottom fish to screaming-fast pelagics and massive wreck dwellers. What we target depends on the season, conditions and what the Gulf is giving us that day. But these are some of the characters you’re likely to meet.
Grouper
Get Him Off The Bottom. Good Luck.
Grouper fishing is a Gulf Coast classic for a reason. They hit hard and immediately try to get back into structure. The first few seconds matter. Win that battle and you’ve earned the rest of the fight.
Snapper
Pretty Fish. Serious Attitude.
Red, mangrove, lane and other snapper species are part of the offshore Gulf mix. They’re aggressive, fun on tackle and can turn a bottom-fishing trip into nonstop action when the bite is on.
Kingfish
Fast. Mean. Zero Interest In Cooperating.
King mackerel are built for speed. When the kings move through our Gulf waters, a hookup can turn into a screaming run in seconds. Fall kingfishing has long been one of the Jawstoo specialties.
Amberjack
Basically A Gym Membership With Fins.
Amberjacks hang around offshore structure and wrecks, and once hooked they have one objective: get back down there. Expect power, stubbornness and the distinct realization that the fish may be winning.
Tarpon
Hook One. Then Hang On.
During the summer migration, schools of tarpon can move along the beaches near Indian Rocks Beach. Their explosive jumps and powerful runs have earned them legendary status. You don’t quietly catch a tarpon.
Cobia
Big Fish. Big Shoulders.
Cobia cruise Gulf waters and can show up around structure and other offshore activity. They’re powerful fish capable of giving an angler exactly the kind of battle they came offshore hoping to find.
AND THEN THERE ARE THE ONES WITH ISSUES.
Barracuda
Teeth First. Questions Later.
Barracuda patrol offshore wrecks looking like they were designed specifically to intimidate people. They’re fast, aggressive and a blast on tackle when you want something with a little extra personality.
Sharks
You Wanted A Fish Story.
Sharks are part of the Gulf ecosystem and can deliver one unforgettable fight. When different species move through these waters and one decides to eat, everybody on the boat tends to notice.
Goliath Grouper
This Is Where Confidence Gets Tested.
Goliath grouper live up to the name. These massive wreck dwellers are capable of incredible power and demand heavy tackle. This isn’t finesse fishing. It’s a battle with something that would very much like to stay exactly where it is.
Blackfin Tuna
Built To Move.
Blackfin tuna can enter the mix during periods of offshore activity and migration. They’re fast, strong and capable of turning an ordinary moment offshore into something considerably less ordinary.
The Jawstoo Difference
Fishing the Gulf means paying attention. Water temperatures change, bait moves and fish migrate. Weather shifts, too, and a wreck that’s alive one day can be quiet the next.
That’s why a Jawstoo trip isn’t built around pretending the Gulf follows our schedule. Captain David fishes the conditions in front of him and targets the opportunities that give the crew the best shot at a memorable day offshore.
Sometimes that’s dinner. Sometimes that’s a screaming drag. Sometimes it’s a fish you’ll be talking about for years.
A quick note about seasons: Fish may be present in Gulf waters even when harvest is restricted or closed. Regulations, harvest seasons, size limits and bag limits can change. Captain David fishes within current regulations and can tell you what’s available to target and what may be kept on the day of your trip.
Timing Matters
